Chapter 1 Reflection: Mapping the Journey- Seeing the Big Picture

1. As we begin our journey through Project-Based Learning it is important to keep in mind that there are many challenges that will unfold as you start out but as you become more familiar with PBL those challenges that you encountered will be worth it. Throughout the first chapter the author gives many examples of teachers who use PBL. All of which prefer PBL over traditional classroom learning and claim they would never return back to the traditional ways. As mentioned in the text it's important to remember that students are up for the challenge, projects are worth the effort, students live and learn in the real world, and new contexts encourage the project approach. 

2. After reading this chapter I came to the conclusion that there are more benefits than issues of using Project-Based Learning. With using PBL students and teachers are simply reinventing their education by building on what they already know. Overall PBL benefits students and teachers the most with its use of collaboration between small project groups and collaboration between the teacher and students. My favorite example from the text was when a teacher mentioned if a previous student of his forgot what mitosis was he at least wants to be sure that student would be able to find the answer. Project-Based Learning helps teachers and students in creating a more successful future for education.

3. There is an endless amount of benefits students gain from using Project-Based Learning. By using real life situations in these projects students are able to relate to what their learning on a more efficient level. With real life situations in PBL students may remember their learning experiences more often and be able to prepare themselves for the future in a world that continues to change. This style of learning also targets students who are more visual and auditorial learners. Personally I wish we had this option of learning when I was growing up. I think collaboration and hands on learning is more effective than lectures.

4. When using Project-Based Learning there may be times when issues occur. For example it's mentioned that if an entire school isn't aboard with PBL it's very difficult to use that style of learning in one or two classrooms. Also, teachers need to be aware of how to change their management style of the classroom to ensure students can become better at managing their own progress. Most importantly teachers need to step off the stage of lecture and traditional teaching and interact with students differently. 

5. New Technology High sounds like the future of education with its centerpiece of educational teaching based on Project-Based Learning. Although they have technology everywhere they ensure it's not the main focus of their learning, but rather a great resource for their education. The only problem I see is that the maximum student body holds four hundred students. Unless communities grant more schools with this advantage I can see a problem in the future with students not being able to enroll due to room available. I do like that there is a set number of students for each grade though because that gives teachers and students more time to collaborate. I think Project-Based Learning is a great tool for education because technology is only advancing and students should keeping up with how times are changing.
